It’s one of the biggest events of the year in the music industry and provides the perfect opportunity for famous faces to make an impression on the red carpet.

And tonight there was a fashion face off as attendees of the 2011 American Music Awards put their best style foot forward.

But it appeared that many stars had the same idea as they stepped out in shimmering metallic dresses at the Nokia Theatre this evening.

Cute couple: Selena was accompanied by her boyfriend Justin Bieber who was sporting a slicked back hairstyle

Selena Gomez ensured she courted attention for all the right reasons in her plunging satin gown by Giorgio Armani, which boasted a tie detail around the dropped waist and a split up to her thigh.

To add to her old school Hollwyood glamour style the singer and actress wore her dark hair in set curls.

She was accompanied by her boyfriend Justin Bieber who had slicked his hair back for the occasion and proved attentive to Selena's every need.

The 19-year-old wasn't the only one who had opted for a shimmering metallic gown and country star Taylor Swift stepped out glittering in gold.

Taylor had opted for a strapless floorlength golden gown by Reem Acra, which was covered in sequins and boasted an elegant train at the back.

Working the camera! Katy, who was without her husband Russell Brand worked the red carpet

As well as boasting a bustiere the frock was covered in sequins and she added a flash of colour with purple heels and her pink hair.

Her husband Russell Brand did not strut his stuff beside her on the red carpet.

Among the first stars to arrive at the event was reality TV star Audrina Partridge whoe showed off her her fabulous figure in a simple cutaway little black dress.

Emma Watson takes centre stage at UK premiere of My Week with Marilyn

Michelle who? Chic Emma Watson takes centre stage at UK premiere of My Week with Marilyn

Michelle Williams' mesmerising transformation into Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn is already garnering Oscar buzz.

But with the film's star a no show at the London premiere tonight, it was up to Emma Watson to step into the spotlight to promote the British movie on home ground.

And the ever-stylish 21-year-old was up to the task, dazzling on the red carpet at the Cineworld complex in Haymarket, central London.
Prim princess: Emma Watson dazzles at the London premiere of My Week with Marilyn tonight

Emma looked prim in a black skirt and white embellished top from designer Jason Wu's Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Her gamine crop was slicked into a side part and her make-up kept fresh and youthful.

The actress and Oxford university student has received fantastic reviews for her first major film role post-Harry Potter.

Spotlight: Emma was the star of the event in Michelle Williams' absence

Watson plays wardrobe mistress Lucy in My Week with Marilyn, opposite the film's protagonist Colin Clark, played by rising star Eddie Redmayne.

Redmayne posed alongside Emma and Kenneth Branagh on the red carpet at the screening, but Michelle Williams and Dame Judi Dench were unable to attend.

Williams' portrayal of Marilyn is winning stellar reviews all over the globe, with rumours that another Best Actress Oscar nomination is expected in the New Year.
Leading men: The 21-year-old was flanked by co-stars Eddie Redmayne and Kenneth Branagh as they posed for photographers
Monroe moment: Cast member Miranda Raison and Downton Abbey actress Elizabeth McGovern both attended
Glamorous: Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael slipped into something a little more contemporary for the event

The film is based on Colin Clark’s memoir of a week as a third assistant director, or dogsbody, on an indifferent British film comedy, The Prince and the Showgirl.

The Daily Mail's film reviewer Chris Tookey called it 'an enchanting tragi-comedy and a feast of fine acting. It’s a hugely enjoyable trifle.'

He says: 'Williams has given exquisite performances before in Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine and the little-seen Incendiary.
Star power: The university student is an old hand at red carpets after years promoting the Harry Potter films
Lovers: Eddie's character Colin has to choose between Emma's wardrobe mistress Lucy and a fling with Marilyn
Growing up: Watson's first big screen role since Harry Potter has been met with critical acclaim

But it’s here that she is at her most magical, brilliantly capturing Marilyn’s voice and physical mannerisms.

'Never content to play her as a victim, she captures both her emotional neediness and her power to entrance, on and off screen.

My Week with Marilyn, also starring Dame Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Dougray Scott and Julia Ormond, opens in the UK on November 25.
